Muhammed Aslam Nasir

In January 2007 the i-gel supraglottic airway was unveiled to the world at the Winter Meeting of the Association of Anaesthetists in central London.

What many in attendance may not have realised is that this very different looking airway with the 'gel' like feel is the culmination of twenty years of hard work by the inventor Muhammed Aslam Nasir and Intersurgical.

1961
Born at Tulamba, Khanewal, Pakistan.
1986
Completes training at Nishtar Medicalcollege, Multan, Pakistan. Moves to Lahore General Hospital as house officer in General surgery.
1988
Elects anaesthetics as his speciality and moves to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Institute, Karachi, Pakistan. Begins to conceive the idea of a truly 'anatomical' soft, supraglottic airway.
1989
Joins The Aga Khan University Hospital in Karachi to gain further training.
1990
Moves to the United Kingdom to take up the position of senior house officer in anaesthetics at The Medway Hospital, Gillingham, Kent. He is now an anaesthetist at an NHS Foundation Trust Hospital north of London.
2002
Research is carried out at the Cambridge University Anatomy department examining and taking impressions of the periglottic spaces in cadavers. Initial sketches and descriptions become fully formed prototypes.
2003
Awarded a SMART award by the Department of Trade and Industry. Joins forces with Intersurgical to develop what is now i-gel. Started fresh cadaveric trials at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, Pennsylvania, USA.
2004
First clinical evaluations with medical-grade material and working prototypes.
2005
Clinical evaluations and pre-production.
2006
CE Marking and start of independent clinical evaluations.
2007
The i-gel is launched at the 'Association of Anaesthetists Great Britain and Ireland's Annual Winter Scientific Meeting' Westminster, London.
